The South African Artists Index

The South African Artists Index is a searchable database that links artists to print publications featuring images of their work.  The focus is on artists active between 1920 and 2019, along with publications that feature work produced in these years.

In general, the Index generates data that assists in identifying and interpreting patterns in artistic practice, curating, and publishing.

In particular, the Index can be used to identify:

• Artists active within specific decades.
• Print publications featuring images of works by specific artists.
• Print publications produced by specific authors/ editors.
• Print publications pertaining to specific curators.
• Titles produced by specific publishers.

The Index can also be used generate lists of artists, authors/editors, curators, and publishers.
