Note: Catalogue produced to accompany the Beyond Binaries exhibition at
KZNSA Gallery (22 February – 19 March 2017). Beyond Binaries was initially
commissioned by the eThekwini Municipality for the inaugural Essence Festival,
(International Convention Centre, Durban, 10 – 13 November 2016), and was
also shown at the Durban Art Gallery, Durban (11 December 2016 – 19 February
2017). The exhibition was curated by Qala! collective (Russel Hlongwane, Robin
Moodley, Mario Pissarra). The timing of Beyond Binaries coincided with ASAI
extending its operational base to Durban, with several Cape Town-based artists
featured on the ASAI website exhibiting alongside mostly KZN based artists.
