Community Arts Project (CAP)

Community Arts Project (CAP) was established in Cape Town in the period following the Soweto Uprisings.  By the late 1980s two CAP’s had emerged: the ‘art school’ (Chapel Street, Woodstock) and the Media Project (Community House, Salt River). The latter constituted as an independent trust (Media Works), before joining again with the mother body to form the Arts & Media Access Centre.  CAP/AMAC closed in 2008.

Note: this list is by no means exhaustive and may contain errors. Any information leading to the improvement of this list is welcomed

Regarding trustees, note that while CAP’s first board stepped down in 1978, successive appointments were not registered with the Master of the Court, until the trust deed was legally amended c. 1997. Accordingly, the term ‘acting trustee’ has been introduced here with the benefit of hindsight, and does not diminish the contribution that these members made to CAP. With regard to the original trustees, the year in which they stepped down has been given, rather than the year they were legally relinquished of their fiduciary responsibilities.

Substantial bodies of works produced at CAP are housed at the University of the Western Cape (Mayibuye Centre and Centre for Humanities Research), while most of CAP’s records are housed at the University of Cape Town Libraries (Special Collections). Thanks to the staff at these institutions who facilitated access to their archives. Thanks to the individuals who contributed resources and relevant information to this online archive: Lionel Davis, Graham Falken, Joseph Gaylard, David Hlongwane, Annette Loubser, Tony Mhayi, Mario Pissarra, Sara Schneckloth and Gavin Younge.
